Hello friends
Almost two weeks into 2024 - how’s it going for you?
At this end, I have to confess that I haven’t had some miraculous personality / brain / energy change - but that said, I’m ok with how things are going and trying to be more accepting towards my… ways. Ways and needs. Accepting but hopefully, gradually improving. So what’s that, tolerating?
So far this year I haven’t been doing barre workouts (yet), but I have been walking. I missed my smear test, but I passed one of my exams with 96%. The house is a mess and I forgot to eat yesterday, but it’s because I got hyper-focused on playing music - so that’s ok overall, I suppose.
I spent yesterday recording a version of a song by Castanets, called Glory B.
I don’t remember how I came across Castanets, but it would have been 2008/2009 that I was driving around the West Country in the night time with this CD on. It was a very good night-driving album, back when the air was warm and I could just enjoy feeling a certain way. I actually try to avoid feeling a lot of ways these days1, but sometimes it’s necessary… To amplify something then try and let it go instead of fixating on it. So I reached for this song. I didn’t listen to the whole album, god - one step at a time. Just Glory B, which always has been one of my go-to tracks for instant gratification. Wistful-girl-winter? The “what the fuck were you thinking?” playlist. “Now THAT’S What I Call Music To Twist The Knife To, Volume 5”. Beautiful, but bitter.
Anyway, here it is :2
I hardly slept last night.
Right now, I’m at work waiting for a delivery of cardboard vinyl mailers that I’m not even sure are coming today.
Now if only I can find and maintain a reality in which I can do positive things (such as finishing coursework and making music) without it being at the expense of everything else in my life (such as living in cleanliness, remembering to eat and resting). If anyone has any tips for this please, ffs, let me know.
Love
Charlie
There’s probably a healthy balance somewhere…
I think I’ve done a better job with the recording / mix than in December’s Jimmy Eat World cover so as well as being good for me to spend time recording music just for fun, it’s good learning too.
I *love* getting to hear your voice like this - what a beautiful arrangement. I've never heard the original but you made it sound like your song, and that's the sign of a great cover. Thanks for sharing this! And huge congrats on your exam xxx
Not familiar with the original, but I like your recording!
